  1. The Crate if fine!  My dogs love it in their crate!  If it weren't for the crates I don't think I would have a house left!!

  2. How old is he?

Typically, if nessisary, an adult dog can manage being in a crate for 8 hours but no more, and they will need exercise before and after.  Five hours is a fine amount of time to leave a dog if they're old enough.

  3. Yes a dog can be crated for 5 hours.  But make sure they get exercise and attention before and after being crated.

When my dog was young she had to be crated when I was at work that was  4.5 hours in the morning and then .5 hour break while I was home at lunch and then 4 more hours in the crate.

  4. It's ok as long as the dog is not cramped in the crate. Make sure it can turn around and take a coupe of steps. Attach a  water bottle to the crate, a bed and something to chew on (raw hide is good).

  5. What kinda dog??

  6. He'll be just fine for 5 hours..Just make sure you leave him a small bowl of water and something to chew on to occupy his time...Also, you may want to leave the tv or a radio on, this will let him feel less "alone"..The human voices will comfort him.. :-)

  7. don't put him  in a crate !!!!

put him in the bathroom or the kitchen , lock the door  and leave water, toys and a blanket that he can lie on

take out of the bathroom or the kitchen  the stuff that he can destroy.

and also turn on the radio or tv that will make him feel less alone

  8. I would put him in a larger but secure space like the bathroom or kitchen. Put some bedding, water bowl, puppy pads, and safe chew toys and food toys for him to work on while you are away.

  9. A crate is the safest place to put him while you are gone and 5 hours is just fine.

  10. i suppose it is OK as long as there is water, comfortable temperatures (not drafy or in direct sun) and food if needed.... just make sure you let the dog pee before and after (ESP if it's young or older)

however if you do this on a daily basis you might want to arrange something better.  perhaps have one room where your dog can roam.. but leave the crate open and available, as many dogs who spend a lot of times in their crates see this as a comfort area.

tv/radio may help as background noise to sooth the dog and if they are a chewer make sure they have a few toys with them!!

  11. when i lived in an apt alone and worked 10 hour shifts my 6 month old would stay calmly in her kennel for close to 12 hrs. occasionally i would have friends come get her and play with her but on days when they didnt she was fine. but def make sure to exercise well before going in. id say a good 30 min run/jog like i did. and a few stops to potty. then same when they get out.

to add to that, make sure the pup is the first thing you tend to when you get home no matter what. when they see you for the first time in a while they tend to not hold it anymore. go straight outside to where you want them to do their business, on a leash for that matter, no matter where you live. i found that whenever she was on a leash she pottied almost instantly when we got to her spot. but if i let her run around she'd wait a while longer.

  12. The crate is the safest place for your dog while you are not home, and any time you cannot supervise them. Most dogs will be fine in a crate by themselves for 5 hours. Make sure you give them time to potty before you leave, and as soon as you get home.

Dogs left locked in a room while you are gone can/will become destructive, which can lead to costly personal property damage, and possibly even the lose of your dog (blockage, electrocution, poisening, etc)

  13. For an adult dog, 5 hours in a crate is no problem.  Just be sure he has adequate exercise prior to going in the crate, and enough time to go potty.

Then when you get home, take him outside to potty, and make sure he has time outside of the crate for play, exercise, and family time.

    He'll be just fine.

  14. Yes, and it is an excellent way to train him. He will be fine for five hours. Give him a couple of toys he can play with so he won't get so bored. Make sure you have fresh water in a container that won't spill over, and something soft he can cuddle up with and take a nap. Good luck to you.
