  1. "Paris", "quite cheap", and "decent", don't really belong in the same breath.

The cheapest I have found in off season is around $100 US per night...at least.  For two adults!

Central Paris will be more expensive than the outskirts.  decent?  depends on your definition.  Decent being slightly lumpy mattresses, and a bathroom down the hall - will be much more reasonable than a really modern motel type place.

(actually, I'm pretty sure the bathroom down the hall thing might be a thing of the past).

  2. To start, what dates are you going?

  3. I have stayed with these people:

Very close to the river Seine, a few minutes walk from the Notre Dame and the Hotel de Ville, and near several Metro stations.

I found it safe, clean and for Paris cheap.

They have single rooms, but also dorms, (and likely several sizes in between, so maybe all your party can stay in one dorm?)

    Added:

One hotel I stayed in did not have a bathroom down the hall, it did have the bathroom two stairs up and then at the far end of the hall. (Right above my bedroom, but no noise.)

That was when I left booking my room with MIJE too late.

It was a hotel in the same part of town, I just walked in an saw that the cheapest room was about 60 Euro, without bathroom two years ago. Will be more expensive now.
