This depends on the state where you live.  In Pennsylvania, an on-line course is available.  See attached link and scroll down to the heading "DISTANCE LEARNING".

It depends on the state you live in. Go to http://www.boat-ed.com/index.htm.  All their course content has been developed in conjunction with the state boating safety agencies responsible for boater education, are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), and are recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard. The test is available for the 41 states listed at the above web address.  Good luck and thank you for becoming an educated boater!
