  1. If it still works, why not try to download a copy of XP? If Your wanting to recycle it, remove the hard drive yourself. There is software that will totally erase hard drives, but I'd keep it for playing games and storing pictures or playing music.

  2. I suggest a thrift store like Goodwill or Salvation Army. That way you can also use the old computer as a tax deduction! It will give a person who hasn't got the money a chance to get an older machine that will probably still do web mail, Internet browsing etc at a price they can afford!

  3. Save the hard drive from inside it as that has all your files and personal info on it.... you could just install that in the next computer and have access to all your info, just like it was a backup copy of all your files... Any Ecycle recycling place will accept the computer (like the GoodWill which is a national E-recycle business covered by the government for taking in used computers)....... they may be able to use parts to repair other donated computers and create jobs for the handicapped or hard to employ .... a win-win for you and society.

  4. delete the hard drive yourself.

Darik's Boot and Nuke (commonly known as DBAN) is an open source project hosted on Sourceforge. The program is designed to securely erase a hard disk until data is permanently removed and no longer recoverable, which is achieved by overwriting the data with random numbers generated by Mersenne twister (a PRNG). The Gutmann method is included with DBAN.

DBAN can be booted from a floppy disk, CD, or USB flash drive and it is based on Linux. It supports IDE, SCSI and SATA hard drives.

Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot disk that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

DBAN is a means of ensuring due diligence in computer recycling, preventing identity theft prior to selling or donating a used computer, and ensuring that a reused disk is completely free of malware. DBAN prevents or thoroughly hinders all known techniques of hard disk forensic analysis.

The development and support of the DBAN software project is funded in part by GEEP International, a consumer electronics recycling company in North America.
