  1. Look for volunteering opportunities here:

    VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org

    Idealist, http://www.idealist.org

    Change.org, http://www.change.org

    CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com

    Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

Volunteering opportunities usually say what skills, abilities and experience you need for them, so if you have those, go for it -- having a disability won't matter (at least it shouldn't).

  2. A museum can probably use your computer skills. You might even be able to work at home! I'm referring to a small, local museum, not the Smithsonian.

  3. There are many choices http://www.volunteermatch.org/

and put in your zip code and it will help you out

  4. There are many organizations that would be happy to have your help.   Because of your disability you may be especially good as a volunteer for a disability rights or advocacy group because people who need their help may be more comfortable with you than with someone to whom they can not relate as well.  Think about what you know how to do and enjoy doing then contact your local United Way and ask how to find a volunteer matching service in your community that is one which helps to put organizations that need help together with people who want to help.

Different organizations need different kinds of help.  Some things that almost every organization needs are people to help with office work, help find grant possibilities on line, help reach out to the community to let them know what the organization does and ask for their support financially and in other ways.   Many also need people who can greet clients that come to the organization for help, answer phone calls, and take messages or look up and give out information.   Most all organizations provide some training for volunteers,

  5. Look up community organizations in the phone book and pick one.  Any organization that would exclude you because you are disabled doesn't deserve to have you volunteer there!
