  1. I have started a project also I  am either going to use a junked prius or an S10.  My auto will definitely have solar panels and be able to plug in. I think the S10 will be more practical for holding solar panels on ladder racks but the Prius already have  some hi tec features. I am studying a hyster fork lift and a golf cart.

The VW will be the perfect size. Try selling the motor to a junk yard  and recycling the parts you don't need to raise money for your project. I have some more info I will post when I find it . Good Luck!!!

Here goes the additional web links.  You can look at Mother Earth News and  Popular Mechanics back issues .....I have read detail description on how to convert in these publication.  Do not under size your electric motor. Fork lifts have used electric for years and have alot of power. I have looked for the lifts  at junk yards and can not find any. I am now going to heavy equipment auctions looking for a Hyster If I find one I am going to use the motor, batteries and charging system. The steel frame will be recycled to raise money for additional parts.

  2. take a look at evworld.com

  3. I'm doing a project on electric cars right now.

Here, Have a couple paragraphs outta my project:

Electric cars are powered by one or more electric motors instead of internal combustion engines like gas cars. Electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. There are two kinds of electric motors, AC and DC. DC motors run at 96 to 192 volts and AC motors run at 240 volts with a 300-volt battery pack. Electric motors are used in other appliances like washing machines, air conditioning, and vacuum cleaners.

Batteries are one energy source for powering electric motors. The rechargeable batteries used in electric cars are lead acid batteries. Rechargeable batteries that are powerful enough to run an electric car are very heavy and bulky. Electric batteries have a limited capacity, which gives electric cars a small driving range. It can take up to 16 hours for the batteries to fully charge and batteries are very expensive, around $2000 a battery pack.

  4. you should be able to find a local group to work with, share cost of batteries, components etc. there is a yahoo group search for "diy_ev" if you say where you are someone should know who is nearby

    in UK see http://batteryvehiclesociety.org.uk/word...

    bob Brant's book http://www.amazon.com/Build-Your-Own-Ele...

will give you the formula for power, range etc  and conversion tips
