Question:

Where can one find <fresh> huitlacoche in the States?

I'm in Los Angeles county, so I'm open to going anywhere around here. However, if another part of the country sells it, they would have to offer online or phone orders, 'cause huitlacoche isn't worth a plane ticket, lol.

Anyone? Please, I'm looking for fresh huitlacoche, not canned. I've read that the canned doesn't have much flavor, but that the fresh is really tasty.

Thanx.

  1. I have never heard of this, but it sounds really interesting. Short of going to Mexico, it sure looks like it is hard to find it fresh, but here a few contacts I found while looking up what it was.

A gentleman named William Levine, a farmer from western mass sells both fresh and fresh frozen. I am going to get my first fresh sample today. He can be contacted at waglevcott@earthlink.net

Here you can buy it frozen...

  2. You will have to find a place where corn is in season. I know that it's a fungus that grows on corn.

  3. If you know someone in the Bay Area that can mail it to you, I saw it a few years ago at Monterey Market in N Berkeley. I don't remember ever seeing it at Berkeley Bowl where I used to shop weekly. It's likely off-season, however, as it coincides with the corn crop
