  1. I had it once.  It tastes like beef, but it's tough, and stringy as h**l.

It's not sold for human consumption in the US.

  2. I am not judging, just answering the question....

People in the United States rarely eat horse meat, but during World War II, due to the low supply and high price of beef, the state of New Jersey legalized its sale. At war's end, the state again prohibited the sale of horse meat, possibly in response to pressure from the beef lobby. Harvard University's Faculty Club had horse meat on the menu for over one hundred years, until 1983.

Until 2007, a few horse meat abattoirs still existed in the United States, selling meat to zoos to feed their carnivores, and exporting it for human consumption, but recently the last has closed by court order.

**WOW!  The govt actually did something right!!

Looks like you'll have to book a trip to France...........

  3. are you fu cked why would any one eat hourse meat i cant belive all of you, you are desgusting housrses are actuly smart like a dog he knows his owner and acts more  friendly towards him/her you dont see a cow or a chicken being friendly to humans for ***** sake the queen rides a hourse you all mine as well be chinesse because thats how forine and gross you all are not to mention heartless there are certin things put on this earth to eat and thouse things are brainless animals that barley no they exist in the first place unlike hourses who do show compaion to humans you all should and most likley will burn in h**l

  4. First I would like to address Adam, who seems so enthusiastically horrified at the prospect of someone eating horse, then I'd like to add my own answer to the question.

Actually Adam, I have travelled abroad extensively and the American diet IS considered the most disgusting. I am fourth generation American, and can claim no heritage elsewhere- I'm your typical American mix-breed, but I do not consume an American diet. People in other countries are appalled at our fast food diets and the amount of obesity in this country. In India they are repulsed that we eat cow, a sacred animal to their religion. There ARE countries out there where dog is readily available, where pig fetus is a delicacy, and they DO crack open a live monkey's head to eat the brains. Who are YOU to judge what other people eat? Go shove another big mac down your throat, and leave gourmet food to those with broader minds and higher standards. By the way Adam, do you know horsemeat is a common ingredient in dog and cat food? Is it ok to feed horse to a dog or cat, but not a human?

Rosiedances: while horsemeat is extremely hard to come by, a little more diligence on your part can yeild the results you want. There are some  butchers online that still are allowed to export horsemeat to the USA. There is a religion called Asatru (based on Norse mythology and the the Vikings warrior lifestyle) and they eat raw horsemeat as part of their religious beliefs.  Because there is freedom of religion here in America, people practicing Asatru are given rights to their religious needs.

Good luck finding the horsemeat, I had it once in Italy (as an ingredient in the gravy (what we call sauce here) and it was amazing, gamey- yes, much more so than lamb or goat (which are both legally consumed here... ) but very flavorful meat.

  5. The above answerer is actually correct. I personally don't eat horsemeat but when I visited France I came across it at Paris's butcher shops many times. You can also try to find it a local German/Belgian deli if possible. Good luck.

  6. I would say cross the border up to Canada, it is legal to sell and eat horsemeat there.  Much closer then flying out to France.  I don't see the problem in eating it, it is rather tasty!
