that is tough one...  The language commonly encountered on the streets of Brooklyn is related to English, but frequently has so much dialect intertwined as to be unintelligable.    The schools are full of individuals who are poorly motivated, uneducated, or who have learned English as a second language.  Certainly, there are courses in English as a second language offered through adult education programs, however, they, too, lack consistency, and it can be argued that English as a second language is not English.

I would recommend that you consider going to Boston to learn English.  While you may still be learning some dialect, at least you will be able to add "snob appeal" to your claims to speak English.  If you want to learn to speak real English, you probably have to go to Oxford, in England.  They claim to be the seat of real English.  If, in your journeys, you do encounter the real English, please make certain you let the rest of the world know about it.  Good Luck!
