Question:

Where can you buy juvenile mice inexpensively?

I'm doing a science experiment about how mice's diet affect their weight gain and I'm on a tight budget. If you have information on where I can also find a cheap cage, bedding material and food, it would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

  1. I'd try a pet store, you should be able to find ones that are sold as snake food, as well as being able to buy cages and bedding.

  2. Usually, pet shops sell mice as "feeders"(part of snakes' and birds' diets) for about $2 a piece. I'm not talking about PetSmart or PetCo....small pet shops.

Cheap cages are hard to find. There are sites with instructions on how to build your own cage which might be the cheapest solution. Bird cages would work fine for a mouse cage as well. Aquariums are a very cheap option as well. If you were to get an aquarium I would put something like a dog's tug rope in to give the mice something to climb on since there are no cage bars. Sometimes, pet stores sell aquariums with tiny cracks cheaply which are just fine for mice. They're just sold cheaply because they can't be used for fish.

One major consideration when you get a cage is the size of the space between the bars. You have to make sure it's not too large of a space because the mice WILL climb through it if it is. They can also squeeze through incredibly small spaces and then your science experiment will be running all over your house.

I would buy walmarts brand of bedding Crittercare because it's much cheaper than CareFresh, the original brand. Good luck.
