  1. Check your local paper. most of the time they have something about farm animals in the classifieds. :]

  2. petlink

you can buy any animal there

  3. http://www.scienceray.com/Biology/Ecolog...

I am in Canada.. I have all kinds of critters picked at Odd and Unusual sales.. see the link.. its exactly what you are talking about...

  4. Like what? Chickens? Or a sheep of something? Go to  a feed store where they food for farm animals, and ask if they have any for sale. if not, ask when they will, or ask for a breeders name and number.

    good luck.

  5. If you're looking to stock yourself a hobby farm, why not look for some animals that will help pay for themselves?

Chickens are great for fresh eggs, dairy goats are wonderful, efficient milk sources (and require less space and feed than cows), pigs can be used to turn soil prior to planting a garden, and sheep work wonderfully as wooley, organic lawnmowers.  Keep that in mind, because livestock is great, but feed and hay are getting more and more expensive!  Get some pets that will earn their keep!

The only animals we raise for meat are some chickens, turkeys and ducks... but we also have goats, sheep and rabbits.  I justify having them because each can help pay their way instead of just being hayburners.

Start by researching what interests you and how to care for them.  Each animal requires certain vet care, feeding and maintenance.  Once you're certain of what you want (and feel confident that you'll be able to care for it properly), I'd recommend starting your search by contacting an ASPCA in a rural area.  We have a terrific organization in this area that rescues only livestock and adopts them out.  Many people with hobby farms have given all kinds of livestock new homes.  Check the rescues first!

Local breeders are often looking for homes for older retirees, pet quality animals and wethered males.  You can find some wonderful pets this way as well.  I practically give away my wethered lambs and kids if I know they're going to a good home.

I also warn people away from sale barns - often, the animals are sickly, old or of very poor quality.  Some of the meanest rabbits I've ever seen came out of auctions!  But I've also been a sucker myself and bought a sickly goat kid for $20, then pumped $300 worth of vet bills into it, and practically gave it away when it was healthy because I knew he was going to a good home.  Don't let your heart drain your bank account, either!

Start with the shelters and check around... most breeders know someone who is downsizing their herd, trading out stock or even giving animals away.  If you find some local breeders, ask questions and network and you'll be surprised with how many sources are out there.

    Good luck!
