Thanks for all the imput guys but is there any other ways to cash the check. It's my mom who is 59 that needs to cash the check. She needs the whole check and she can't afford to pay a cashing fee. Also her credit is all messed up so she can't open any type of account.

  1. The way to handle this is for her to open a simple savings account, deposit the check, wait a few days for it to clear, and then withdraw some money.  A bank will set up a savings account even if "her credit is all messed up".  And then she'll have an account to use for depositing SSI checks.

Other than that, she's stuck paying fees at a check cashing service.

  2. If you are under 18 or over 65, consider opening a savings account with an ATM card.  You can then deposit the check into the savings account, and withdraw what you need with the ATM card.  There are generally no fees for savings accounts.  Alternately, get direct deposit to the savings account so you don't even have to go to the bank and your deposit gets there much faster and safely.

  3. At a check cashing place  ......Amscot...they charge you an arm and a leg.  You can now get your SSI check as a debit card instead of a check. ( My Mom does)

  4. Doug, there are many check cashing offices for a small fee. You can simply open an account (checking) at a local bank. They will even give you an ATM check cashing card. You use the SSI check as a start up amount and come back for some cash later, ask the bank teller/mgr.

  5. There are companies that will cash cheques for you, give you cash on the spot, but for a fee so would not get the full amount of te cheque. Try Loan companies.

  6. AMSCOT WILL CASH IT FOR YOU FOR A FEE,AS LONG IT IS YOUR CHECK AND YOU HAVE PROPER ID. HOPE THIS HELPS
