  1. Pagan Dan, Yes, the French did invade Vietnam and the decision was made by Napoleon in 1857. They attacked the harbor and city of Da Nang in August 1858 with 14 vessels and 2,500 men.  They later decided to attack Saigon and occupied 3 other regions and other territories in the South and placed under French rule. They changed the entire region to Cochinchina and occupied Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

The imperialism-colonialism definitely practiced by the French during that time.

Vietnam may be small but we're not afraid to kick ***.

Sorry about this but I have to say it. :-)

You can find Vietnam currencies on EBay

  2. lol....i highly doubt it u can find any of those old bill

plz...how the h**l can u colonize if VN don't want ur azz there? u have to invade it in order to "colonized"

to the person who open this question....the French didn't occupied until 1975....they pull their troops out in 1954, all thanks to Viet Minh....

it doesn't matter if u call it colonized, it's still invading people country and live on it....colonized is just another way to make those who invade look like they are doing the right thing....they are nothing more than people who took people country and used as it's their own...

  3. If you are going to Ho Chi Minh, I suppose there are many small stalls along the road like Dong Khoi where they sell very old coins and notes. You may be able to find there and cheaper too.....

  4. You might try Ebay, or search the markets when in Vietnam.  Cheers

  5. I see old bills and coins in shops in Ha Noi and in other cities around VN. You can no doubt find them on the internet as well.

  6. France did not "invade and occupy" Viet Nam.  They colonized it.  Big difference.

In response to the history lesson, France colonized Viet Nam.  They did not invade and occupy, as we understand the terms today.

By modern criteria, it certainly was an invasion and occupation.  However, it is not fair or accurate to judge people in history by the standards we apply today.

In the modern world, for example, nobody would ever attempt to justify owning slaves, or the divine right of kings, or the repression of women, or the taking of aboriginal land, or anything of that nature.  Times have changed, mercifully for the better--in most ways.

  7. web

  8. For online, try this site:

    http://art-hanoi.com/collection/sale/

Or you could check out eBay listings.

If you're going to Ho Chi Minh City you can try the District 1 shops near the Saigon Tax Trade Center. But better go there in the afternoon coz the shops close early. There, you'll find old cash coins from the 1800s, old South Vietnamese and Indo-China coins as well as obsolete paper money. Unfortunately most of these items are sold as tourist souvenirs so you may find the common coins slightly more expensive than what is quoted in coin catalogues. So far I haven't come across any specialized Vietnamese coin shops in the city, but that is probably due to the low demand for these old currencies and no collector base. Vietnam has for decades been using only paper money. Hopefully the re-introduction of coins for circulation will spur new interest in coin collecting.
