We just found out today that my son who is almost 5 has ADHD. We are taking it slowly and trying more natural options for now. We would like to try the special diet first but being a family with very poor eating habits, we dont really know where to start. My husband and I are doing a "sweep" of our entire pantry/refridgerater and we are all going on this diet. My dilema is..........I dont really know what to buy. Is there a website that goes into more detail about this diet?? I know we need to cut out perservatives, dyes, and most surgars. I just need something more detaiiled. Thanks in advance to everyone =-)

  1. Here is my question how did he get diagnosed with this at 5??? you can not even start to know if they have ADHD in a boy tell late 2nd grade and sometimes after that! You better get a second opinion fast! Boys are very over active that is the way they are you need to focus his energy in other things, take him for bike rides long walks play at a park and other things like that. Also set some boundaries for your child 8p,m bed time 7pm wind down time where you read books have a snack and just talk!! Kids love to talk. Boys have way too much energy and that is normal. I would go and get another opinion. Also as for eating no fast food! no soda and no juice with high fructose corn syrup. make salads boys need lots of Greens in their diets. not so much sugar will probally help bring him down a level. give him fruits and veggies whole grain cereal to snack on things like that. good luck and get another opinion!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I'm not sure, but let me tell you this in case you do not know.  Some recent studies have just come out on fish oil and ADHD and how taking fish oil really helps the chemical imbalances in the ADHD brain.  Please look on the Internet for information and talk to your doctor about it and seriously look into getting fish oil pills for your son.  You might also think about adding in more fish to his diet.

  3. First of all get a 2nd and maybe even a 3rd opinion. Im an adult with ADHD and I truely believe its over diagnosed in children. Before putting your child on drugs try just feeding him lots of fresh fruit and veggies, whole grains, lean protein and filtered water. No junk food, no sugar, no processed foods. Look into a book about clean eating diet. It would help.

  4. Erin, go to this site:

    http://www.adhdquestionsandanswers.com/A...

At the same site, also read up the article on ADHD vitamins, "dealing with ADHD children", "teaching ADHD children" etc.

Encourage your son to get involved in some form of physical exercises as well, such as swimming etc.

Studies have shown that eating right and regular exercises can do wonders for ADHD kids.

By the way, when you said your kid has ADHD, I hope it was a diagnosis done by a doctor who is well versed in ADHD. Most doctors don't know much about this disorder and thus could result in a misdiagnosis. The one with the most training in ADHD are child psychiatrists. Just my two cents worth of opinion.

I wish your son good health and a bright future. Most people with ADHD are very intelligent and creative. I wouldn't be surprised if he (your son) is one of them.

  5. this is the perfect diet for an ADHD kid. Friends use it and it makes a HUGE difference. It is a diet designed for those with behvioural problems , especially ADHD. Good luck , you won't be disappointed.

It is interesting to read the other peoples answers. Fruit can actually be one of the worst things for kids with ADHD. There is something (can't think of name right now) in fruit that can trigger kids.

  6. ask the pediatrician for a referral to a nutritionist.

  7. the big thing in my sisters diet is corn syrup she is on that special diet and it has worked wonders. im sorry i dont know where to look but i know what he can and cant have i learned from my sis.

  8. I like the Mayo Clinic website. According to the Mayo Clinic website changing a child's diet that has ADHD is not necessarily effective as no study has found a consistent link between the two. However the site is still very helpful and lists some other food and information.

  9. This whole ADHD thing is c**p! NO child at that age or at any young age should be allowed taking those pills. My brother was put on it at the age of 6 and is still on it because he is addicted to them. They made him like a d**n zombie. Is that how you really wanna see your child? Also Sugar doesn't cause a child to be hyper. It's what they do to do it and you'll  see that when you take most of the sugar away. People need sugar in their diet but hey whatever works for you.

Not that my opinion really matters but I've lived through it, It's a horrible thing to see. Even worse when it's your own child.

    Good luck and take care
