  1. Your best bet is to get a freshman intro to geology text book from the library. This will be non-technical and more accurate than relying on this website.

Also consider joining a geology society. The student rates are often very cheap. The American Mineralogical Society puts out a very good bimonthly magazine and costs only $7 for students.

The American Geophysical Union is $15 or so for students and includes a weekly newspaper + a subscription to Physics Today (Why geologists get this magazine is beyond me. None of the geologists I know read it. Maybe the geophysicists like it)

The Geological Society of America has a monthly magazine, GSA Today, and includes access to the Geology and GSA Bulletin archives. I think it costs ~$30.

There is also the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, though I I'm not a member so I don't know costs or benefits.

  2. You can try university websites. They usually have their faculty's emails online. However, don't expect a speedy response. Professors and instructors are very busy.

This site is the only one I know of that has geologists that can answer your questions with fairly speedy times. Of course, not everyone who answers in here is a geologist but some of them are still good answerers.
