Looking to find the real thing in Madrid -- either in a liquor store or in a bar. PLEASE share your wisdom!

  1. If I am not mistaken real Absinthe was outlawed in Europe nearly a century ago because of its addictiveness. I don't remember seeing it anywhere. In Spain the closest thing would be Anis EL MONO, which is an aniseed based liqueur. The Dry one is very close to absinthe, mixed with water gives a milky colour.

    Then the french have the different brands of "PASTIS", this is the drink that replaced absinthe in France when it was outlawed. There is Pastis 51, Ricard, and one or two more who's names I don't recall...

  2. wrong city, need to be in Barcelona.  You'll find it in Madrid, but you'll be looking for it for a minute!  Barcelona still drinks that stuff. MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE PROCESS for Absinthe, or suffer some serious side effects!

  3. If you search guide books and stuff you may be able to find Absinthe Bars, that serve many different brands. And department store like Harrods in London should have a couple brands
