  1. Some shelters and rescue groups have "special needs" animals for adoption. Some are blind, some are deaf, some are missing a leg, some have chronic health problems that will need to be treated for the rest of their lives.

As for any special requirements, it depends on the individual animal. Training a blind or deaf dog is different from training other dogs. Some animals need special diets. Some require regular health care, like rabbits whose teeth don't line up right and need to have them clipped to keep them from overgrowing. Other times, "disabled" animals actually get by just fine - many three-legged dogs don't even seem to know that they're missing anything! I've had a few cats who were missing an eye, and they got by just fine without any extra attention.

Remember, any time you adopt from a shelter or rescue, you're saving a life! Many of the animals there have been abused or neglected, but even if you adopt an animal that was surrendered because a kid got sick of it or the owner died, you're doing the animal a huge favor. Homeless animals are ALL in need, and giving any of them a good home is a wonderful thing to do.

Check http://www.petfinder.com/ for pets available in your area. The "special needs" ones will have a certain symbol by their name, and if you read the information about the pets, it usually describes their background, personality, and any special needs the animal might have.
