such as foreign securities, and if you want to search by "honey manufactures" or "start up companies" Do you have to ask a broker or can you some how find this information on your own?

Foreign stocks traded in the US are traded as ADRs (I think bank of new york? does the clearing). You can visit the NYSE and NASDQ website for stocks traded.

Unless you are a high networth client you can directly talk to a broker but normally online brokers or brokerage in general would normally have their own website and client are provided with research, investment and trading tools accessible through their website.

Yahoo finance or google finance site can be extremely helpful for search and stock screening.  Marketwatch also offer the same feature.
