The submitter above me is mistaken, primarily because Snopes is outdated, but she should still be commended, as she actually did research, which is what Yahoo answers is all about. It is not an Urban myth, it has been true since 1992.

Ronald McDonald House charities is the Largest Recycler of Aluminum Pull tabs, at close to 31 million tabs a year (492 million last time I heard, of which I gave them 3 million).

Almost any city of size, has a variety of non-profits which recycle tabs. My City alone has 2 Schools, a McDonalds, a Cub Scout Pack, the Local Hospital (which uses the funds for it's Dialasis Unit), and an Emergency Air Life unit, that save tabs. If the organization you are saving tabs for does not have a collection program, you can always start one yourself, once you have what you want, bring them to a scrap yard, or you should be aware that there is a strong demand for Tabs in the E-Bay community, as people need large quantities for arts and crafts.

My Cub Scout Pack has sent 34 members to Summer Camp, and intends to send 39 more this year off our sale of tabs.

It should be noted though, that there is no special higher grade of aluminum in tabs, they are in fact just scrap aluminum, the standard Type I Silver tab (which accounts for 96.36% of the tabs I have dealt with) weighs in at 0.65 pounds (10.4 ounces) per thousand, or 650 pounds per million. ( I know this for a fact, because I have 2,529,556 of the buggers in the garage in 102 five gallon pails).

Many people say turn in the whole can as part of a recycling project, but they forget that 11 states have deposit laws, it might be hard to get somebody to give up $1.20 ($2.40 in Michigan) for thier case of cans, but the 24 tabs are easy to get out of them. It takes 51.6 tabs to equal the aluminum in the can
