Rats should be kept in large, multi-level cages and never in single level cages or aquariums. I have a write up on good rat cages here:

Obviously .. in your shorts    :)   Lol, no really, you can carry one around in your sweatshirt pocket, purse, backpack, whatever.  remember that they can chew pretty fast  tho, so if you get one and do these things, check on it often so it doesn't escape without you knowing.... and they p**p & pee.  That is one thing you should know right out the gate ...
