  1. Do you know if anybody named Helmbrecht was ever granted a coat of arms?  Coats of arms do not belong to surnames.  They were and are granted to an individual and are passed down through the legitimate male line of descent.

People who display those little walnut plaques with a coat of arms and family history on it, are usually just displaying one that was granted to someone with their surname and might not even be related. Anybody who visits their home and sees one of those plaques on their den wall or over their fireplace, and if they know anything about genealogy or heraldry, will be quietly amused.  Courtesy means you don't laugh at people in their own homes.

There might have been, for instance, 15 different men with the same surname, not all necessarily related, each granted their own coat of arms, all different.  Then some persons with that surname were never granted a coat of arms.

No one peddler who sells them on the internet, at airports, at shopping malls, in magazines or solicit by mail will have all 15.

They don't need to in order to sell to gullible people.  The only time any one of those merchants of deceit will have more than one is if more than one person with that surname from different national origins were granted one.  Then they will have one of each when in fact there might have been several of each.

See the links below, one from the British College of Arms(they grant coats of arms) and the other from the most prestigious genealogical organization in the U.S., The National Genealogical Society.

If you are a student and this is an assignment print off the 2 links and give them to your teacher.  To satisfy your assignment, if possible, put Coats of Arms in your search engine or a misnomer "familycrest." and if you see one print it off.

Also feel free to print off what I have posted here and give it to your teacher.
