  5. The term "dog" has been used as a synonym for sausage since at least 1884 ('A sausage-maker...is continually dunning us for a motto. The following, we hope, will suit him to a hair: "Love me, love my dog."') and accusations that sausage-makers used dog meat date to at least 1845 ("Dogs...they retails the latter, tails and all, as sassenger meat.")

  6. People originally though the meat was froma dog instead of a pig. They called it a hot dog but once they found out it was froma pig, they couldn't be bothered to change the name.

  11. There are several stories regarding how the name "Hot Dog" came to be used.

One of the most popular is that a cartoonist/journalist came up with the name when he could not spell the word dachshund, another nick-name for the sausage roll used in the early 1900s. Unfortunately this story asks you to believe that a professional writer didn't own a dictionary, also this cartoon has never been found.

The term "Hot Dog" was used in the Yale University newspaper in the late 1800s (the earliest verifiable use) to describe the sausages served by the local vendors. It was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the meat used to make them. This story seems to be the most authentic and accurate.
