Lee grew up in  Alexandria, Virginia in a series of relatives' houses. Lee attended Alexandria Academy, where he obtained a classical education along the lines of quadrivium. Lee was considered a top student and excelled at mathematics. His mother, a devout Christian, oversaw his religious instruction at Christ Episcopal Church in Alexandria.

Robert  went to College at the United States Military Academy  (West Point) and graduated in 1829  2nd in his class.
