so if you ask me all of these mixed martial arts schools are lowering the respect levels that come along with a traditional school! i have been in hapkido since i was 4 years old and im 18 now...i visited an mma school and i dont understand how some students there get away with talking and answering to there instructors in a disrespectful mannor...i was taught every question or answer ends with ma'am or sir and any form of disrespect whether it be verbal or physical will be punished! why is it different in an mma school!?

  1. Hi,

I agree totally, I think there may be too many Masters and not enough students! These days you get people who train for  a couple of years and decide to open their own school. Maybe its a case of jack of all trades and Master of none! These people have no discipline and do not want to be confined to any set rules and don't know if anyone else feels the same but the amount of aggression present in MMA is overwhelming to say the least.x

  2. I would be careful about lumping all schools of a particular type together based on a single experience.  Certainly there are students and school in most every style who could use a lesson in courtesy.

  3. I think it depends on the school you go to. I don't know much about MMA, but it's always up to the instructor to demand respect from their students. Maybe they're just more casual, since MMA is a more contemporary martial art. Traditional martial arts classes are more strict about dojo etiquette because of deeply ingrained customs and traditions that, often, have been held for hundreds of years. However this doesn't mean that all students of a traditional martial art are going to be respectful. Some might  just be polite in class, and then behave badly as soon as they leave, when the instructor can't get at them anymore.

It's not right to judge all MMA schools based on one bad experience. It's up to the student to be respectful, no matter what art they train in, and if they don't want to be, you can't make them. With most people, while traditional martial arts classes encourage good behaviour, courtesy is just something you have, or something you don't.

  4. MMA is a sport, and it's an aggressive contact sport.

Just like Football, Lacrosse, Rugby, etc. most MMA people play the macho type and are stuck up. The main purpose for MMA is to beat the c**p out of your opponent in a cage whereas in a TMA it's to respect and gain confidence from your inner-self. You're always gonna stumble across people like that. There are good people and there are bad people. Today just standing in a street a jeep of people rode by and shrieked at me. Then 5 minutes later, a van comes by and a person spills water on me. Boy i am so lucky to say the least. Well, there you have it.
