  1. I think you're talking about 105.9 KIJZ.  It is now KOOL, and I don't like it!  I don't know if Portland/Vancouver has a true jazz station anymore, unless the Mt Hood Community College still has their radio station.

  2. It's gone and here's why. Smooth Jazz has lost favor among broadcasters. The audience levels weren't enough to justify dedicating an entire FM frequency to the format in a large market. Add the fact that the format requires a very low commercial load to make it work, and certain advertisers didn't "fit" the format (loud car dealers, rock concerts, etc) and it was a very hard sell.

My consulting company actually used to specialize in Smooth Jazz, but we eventually lost all the clients we had in that format because they couldn't afford to promote and advertise.

Certain Smooth Jazz stations (in major markets) will probably always be around (WNUA, Chicago; WVMV, Detroit; KHJZ, Houston; KKSF, San Fran etc) because they are big money makers and are very well programmed. But Boston - forget it, who knew?

But your guess is as good a mine as far as Portland is concerned. It's possible that Entercom or Salem might switch one of theirs, or perhaps if they get their act together on HD you'll most certainly get a Smooth Jazz station again. But you'll have to go buy a new radio.

Nothing in life is simple, keep in mind the business mindset is, "We've got this frequency, what will make the most money?"

And please don't blame the messenger ;<)
