    Salt Mines

  2. I imagine they watched the deer and buffalo, who would go to natural deposits. Then they could get it from there. But salt mines existed, and they brought salt with them as they traveled.

  4. Ocean and Bay water were the most common sites.  The salt was gathered by simple evaporation, but this often takes years.

Inland, naturally occurring salt licks and underground deposits are common, but usually clustered in just a few localities.  The biggest problem with these are possible contamination with other salts, like Potassium nitrate, sulfate and phosphate and various Carbonates.  These were not as popular are sea salt because they often tasted bitter or metallic.

Once the Great Salt Lake was discovered, salt became readily available for shipping all over the United States, even back to the Eastern coast.
