  1. As a more or less formal study it derived from a famous book on economics,  The Wealth of Nations and from the work of Malthus, also largely economic in theme.

    People hate to admit it but the study of people in society is going to have to be largely economic and Marx was (is) largely influential.  His observation are good even if his economic theories are wrong.  

    Even now you can get better ideas on sociology from the economists, they tend to write more clearly and with less bullsh*t than  sociologists.
