  1. According to wikipedia, the carnival of Venice (or Carnevale di Venezia in Italian) was first recorded in 1268.

    However that was the first official one recorded. I would say that since Christianity began, there may always have been some kind of final celebration before beginning the 40 days of Lent leading up to Easter. Lent tradititionally involved abstaining from meat as well as lots of other nice stuff, hence you would have eaten meat (that's what the "carn" in carnival stands for).

    I have eaten "frittate"  (literally "fried things") for carnival, which are golf ball shaped doughnut-type things, shot with raisins.


  2. hi I'm italian and i live near venice!it depends this year the main week of carnival is the next:15 thursday is called 'giovedì grasso' and 20 tuesday 'martedì grasso'.wednesday 21 is ash wednesday.i really like the food!we make:frittelle,castagnole,galani...all is fried!
