Where did the Zodiac Killer's symbols come from?

I don't think that he made up all those symbols on his own, so where did they come from? Did anyone/anything else use them before he did? Where else can I see them?

Someone must have had them before he did..

Zodiac was a type of watch...Which supposedly is where the zodiac symbol came from (Circle with a cross)...The symbols in his messages were letters, mirror images of leters, and simple shapes...Likely he had alot of time on his hands...On theory was that the Zodiac and the Unibomber Ted Kazinski ..were the same person..
