Where did the cartoon heart come from?

I was just wondering where the cartoon / valentines day heart came from; it doesn't look anything like a real heart, other than the fact that it is made up of two halves.

Well, i don't know the actual answer, but do keep in mind that the cartoonish version of the heart was created long before people actually examined how a human heart looks like in reality.
