Where did the current women's volleyball shorts style come from?

Basically, why do they wear these tiny Lycra/spandex shorts?

I can't see much of a benefit to the women, if they wanted to wear small shorts they could wear like joggers shorts. I can't say they aren't *flattering* sometimes, but who made this rule and/or trend?

  1. They came into their own because of their fit to the body.  They don't limit mobility like loose fitting shorts do, and they also stay in place, so the player doesn't worry about the shorts riding up or moving in such a way as to show something they would rather keep private.  Without these worries, a player will do more to get the ball up.

Am I a fan of the shorts?  Nope.  I hated wearing them.  But I do understand the benefit of them as opposed to the regular loose shorts.

  2. I hate wearing them for volleyball. I wish they were longer and a little bit looser.

  3. I played volleyball for 4 years in high school and i know a lot of girls hated wearing the shorts but they really made moving around the court much easier.  You are constantly jumping, digging, and sliding.  Such a close fit really helps take away any distraction that loose fitting shorts might make.  For the first two years we used regular basketball shorts and then we got lycra.  I honestly feel like my performance was better with the spandex/lycra shorts.

  4. maybe they wear it for more flexibilty

  5. idk but it is a fad i guess.

and girls feel like showing a lot of skin these days

girls correct me if im wrong

  6. u mean spankies!!!!! i love our spankies! spandex rocks! (for most ppl) and baggiy jogging shorts effect the way that u play because it can slow u down. when u go to dig and u squat or dive baggy shorts could come up a little to far if u know what i mean so really u are showing less skin wearing spankies. my personal favorite is the mizuno 2.5 inch inseam  lowrise

  7. the reasons girl wear theses tight fitting spandex is for many different reasons. one they allow you to be totally mobile and do not limit any movement. for baggier and long shorts they are harder to move in. spandex also do not ride up and there is no chance that the player will flash anybody with spandex. spandex are also safer because there is no way for them to get caught on anything or anyone and injure themselves. they also allow for better jumping and diving and when you dive on the ground they slide pretty well and there is no chance they will come off.

i have played volleyball for many years and i have to say i much prefer spandex to any other short

  8. idk it's just how they wear it just to show everything
