  1. In 1980, Lindy Chamberlain reported that her baby was stolen by a dingo but she was not believed. She was convicted of murdering her daughter Azaria and the conviction was not overturned until 1986 when new forensic evidence proved that a dingo really had taken her child.

  2. There have been cases where wild dingo dogs have carried off babies from the australian outback.  There was a famous case near Ayres Rock where the mother said a dingo took her child but she may have killed the child herself.  Meryl Streep played the mother in the movie.

  3. It's from an episode of Seinfeld. Elaine was tired of listening to a boring woman at a party so she shut her up with 'maybe the dingo ate your baby'...

  4. Watch the movie to get the full effect

  5. Alright, combine those first two answers I guess.  Seinfeld is famous for taking lines from movies, intentionally and blatantly, so yes it came from the Meryl Streep movie, but was probably made more popular because of the Seinfeld episode.
