Where did the game of golf as we know it originate?

Well as we know it probably in Scotland around 1600 or so.  But it is often thought that they got the idea from a game played in the Netherlands prior to that.  But that game that you know with cast perimeter weighted irons, and metal woods with graphite shafts and two peice balls orginated in the late 1970s or early 1980s.

I don't really want to spend a bunch of time researching this.. Wikipedia should do just fine for you.  But I though I would share something I recenty found out that is a big part of golf as we know it; the 4.5 in. diameter hole.  The reason that the hole is consistently this diameter is because the official diameter was taken from a hole cutter in Scotland a long time ago, which was made to cut the hole so that they could put the hole liner in, which happend to be a drain pipe.  So we owe the 4.5 in. diameter hole to Victorian age plumming.  Just something I found interesting.

How do we know it?  Golf was "invented" in Scotland, but the first versions of it didn't include 18 holes.

The first complete form of golf as we know it today began around 1300 , but men have been hitting a ball with a stick forever. But, it wasnt like the form of golf as we know it today
