Where did the idea originate that dead people leave coins around your house as a sign of their presence?

When I used to read ghost books, years back, a lot of poltergeist stories involved coins appearing out of thin air. They were often found to be warm and were sometimes allegedly from other times. Hearsay, generally.

I'd imagine that if you were some Derek Acora style medium, it would be extremely easy to use sleight of hand. This way coins could seem to appear. This would bolster your credibilty and be good for business. I know that the man who investigated Borely Rectory was known to keep small stones in his pocket for the same reason. Who knows?

Folk Lore. There are a ton of weird stories out there, like if a candle goes out you are being visited or if you put a bowl of ice in your house it will attract spirits....yea lol

i never heard that - only the coins on their eyes to ferry them across the afterworld.  I'd like to get coins instead though!

I don't know, but wouldn't it be nice if the coin is a Draped Bust Silver Dollar? I have heard of ghosts moving coins on a piece of paper with an outline of the coin on it when used as a trigger object?
