Where did the insult to call a girl a ***** come from?

i know the word *********. isn't nearly as insulting anymore cause girls call each other that all the time but from what i know a ********* is a female dog. how did a word for a female dog suddenly became a word to call women. what does it mean to call a woman a ********* and a real definition on where it came from.

and the reason why there are periods in between ********* is because yahoo answers censored it.

i guess because females used to call bad dudes dogs so i guess a ********* is the female version of it
