i believe it started after the Americans gave us the independence...the Americans brought in their willy's jeep, macarthur jeep , valve in head engine jeep which were all used by the American soldiers and eventually were used by the Filipinos which they converted into public utilities which they call 'auto calesa' that could seat in 4 to 6 persons....then with the Filipinos' ingenuity, they converted them into longer type of jeep to accomodate more people....hope this would answer your question
