Where did the name American River "River Rats" come from?

Here's a flash...My name is Steven Prayor; and along with two friends, founded "The River Rats"; 1975-76, originally just friends who partied, swam, and befriended rafters on the American River. (off El Manto Dr.). We took the name from the American River College newspaper...The River Rat. Now the River Rat is American River Raft Rentals; and of course the ARC newspaper is called "The Aardvark.
