  1. It sounds like the German-Austrian-Yiddish affectionate diminuitive version of Keziah, a Hebrew name that means  "strip off the bark" and which gave its name to the cassia plant. Cassia is sometimes used as a substitute for cinnamon. The name comes from the Bible (Job 42:14; one of Job's daughters). Other versions of Keziah are Kazla, Kaziah, Ketzl, Ketzla, Ketziah, Kezil, Kezia, Kissle, and Kitzela.

  2. "Kizie" sounds like a different spelling of my paternal great grandmother's maiden name, Keesee.  Records on Ancestry.com maintain that "Keesee" is an American adaptation of the French name, "La Caze", and that the first Keesee in America was a French Huguenot named Jacques La Caze.  Some researchers claim that George Keesee (b. 1700), who settled in Henrico County, Virginia, was the original French settler, although Ancestry.com records George as the son of Jacques.  Still other sources claim that Keesee is either a German or Czech name.

Genealogy can be so confusing!  My great-grandmother's family emigrated from Virginia to Texas before the American Civil War and settled in Washington County near the German settlement of Brenham, so, of course, for years, her descendants thought she was German.  Listed below are some sources I have used to help research my family history.  Join in the fun; we're glad to include anyone whose name sounds vaguely like Keesee!

  5. I could not find a direct source, but it is possible that it is a nickname for Kezia, one of Job's daughters.

  6. Not sure? I think this name is an German name or African maybe.
