  1. As in the plant?

  2. its greek for "water tub"--thats all i know-I think its because the flowers are like little cups.

  3. Google it! (but I'll bet it's Greek...hydr- meaning 'water)

also, plants are generally classified by what is known as the "Latin binomial" (even though the Latin word/s may have been derived from Greek or some other more ancient language)  (=2-word)as in: "hydrastis canadensis: the name for the herb "Golden Seal."

again: use Google ... that's what it's there for.

  4. Name: Hydrangea means 'water barrel' and refers to the shape of the fruit after it has sprung open.

Origin: Japan - introduced into UK in 1788.

  5. Hydrangea was chosen for the genus name because the plant’s fruit has the shape of an antique water vessel.  Hydrangea is made up from the Greek words hydor meaning water, and aggeion meaning receptacle.  The name is a good one for another reason.  Hydrangeas consume huge quantities of water.
