    In civil law, the word 'real' relates to land as distinuguished from personal property. The term is applied to lands, tenements and what are called hereditaments, properties that are inherited.

    'Real estate' refers to land and anything permantently affixed to the land such as light fixtures, plumbing and heating fixtures, or other such items which would be personal property if not attached. The term real estate is generally synonymous with real property.

    In common law 'real' refers to things that are permanent, fixed and immovable which cannot be carried out of their place; as lands and tenements.

    The etymology of real is Middle Latin and means relating to things (res) in law.
