Having heard this phrase many times in various contexts, I'm wondering where it comes from and what it actually means. Where does the phrase originate? If any one can shed any light on my conundrum i would be most grateful!

many thanks

  1. Sidewalk entertainers would dance for pennies -- that is, go through a couple of quick steps in return for being thrown a few cents.

The sidewalk entertainers or "buskers" would work the lines waiting to get into theaters.

They still operate in New York City, along Broadway, mostly doing break dancing.
