Where did the phrase "hit the sack" originate from?

although fallen out of common usage ,one defination of sack is a bed. early mattresses were often made from a cloth sack stuffeed with hay,hair or some other form of padding. infact "sack out" is defined as "to go to bed, to go to sleep".

This comes fro a sixteenth century word 'sack, which was white wine, sometimes sweetened and spiced.

This phrase was used for taking this wine ' let us hit the sack.'
