  1. although fallen out of common usage ,one defination of sack is a bed. early mattresses were often made from a cloth sack stuffeed with hay,hair or some other form of padding. infact "sack out" is defined as "to go to bed, to go to sleep".


  2. mattresses used to be stuffed with hay. thats all i know.

  3. This comes fro a sixteenth century word 'sack, which was white wine, sometimes sweetened and spiced.

    This phrase was used for taking this wine ' let us hit the sack.'

  4. Mattresses in the 19th century were filled with sacks and hay.

    Also "hit the hay" comes from the same thing.
