  1. The are not two lions. Look harder. It is a lion and a unicorn. If you do not know what a unicorn was, look it up.

A lion, the king of beasts, is considered synonymous with royalty.  It's use on heraldic crests and flags dates back to antiquity.  The Egyptians used a stylized lion to create the Spinx.  In Ancient Greece and other ancient cultures, the lion was also used as a symbol of strength.  The Lions rampant, on either side of the British coat of arms, represent guardians.  Note their bared claws and teeth.  (As Obanlass... states, two are used to represent Lancaster and York.)
