Where did the saying "hairball'? come from

If you owned a cat or were owned by one, you would understand this...a cat will gag and cough and strain and vomit up a ball of hair...they get hair in their esophagus when they groom themselves...

when cats l**k themselves they hack up hair.  Hence "hairballs".  Kind of disgusting if you ask me.
