Where did the sea shells go?

I remember going to the beach as a kid and there would be shells everywhere. Now when I go to the beach there are hardly any anywhere. what happend? where did they go?

I do have a hypothesis or two as to why they are disappearing. Firstly I notice that a lot of beaches are cleaned by big machines that rake up debris(I assume people will hurt their feet and sue for getting cut on a shell).

Fish and other marine organisms are also disappearing from the ocean, alot of invasive species are also turning up in areas where they shouldn't be and are changing the the ecosystem.

Man himself is where to put most of the blame, we are over fishing and dredging the bottoms of the oceans and taking as much as we please and nary a chance of recovering for some species.

Good example of this is Monkfish were a hot item in restaurants etc. and in order to get them the ocean bottom must be scraped, in turn harming everything else.
