  1. From the Latin "familia", which meant household, it denoted servants as well as members of blood lineage living in the same dwelling. In the 1600's it came to be associated with members of a kin unit, ldwelling together or not. If you could claim a common ancestor, relative, you were "family"....the French used it, "famille" meaning familiar, as well as other Latin based languages.

  2. http://dictionary.reference.com/help/faq...        This link will show you why we started using the word family . But i couldnt find anywhere where the word came from. This link even tells you why we started using the words daughter, son, dad and mom .

  3. French famille from Latin familia.  It means the people you are familiar with.

  4. I think the word family and the word father actually have a common root.

  5. The word is from the Latin : 'familia' - household; household servants, which in turn came from another Latin term: 'famulus' - servant.  It was first used to refer to the servants of a household and then to both the servants and the descendants of a common ancestor. It was not until 1667 that the term was used specifically for a group of persons consisting of parents and their children.
