Question:

Where did the word "pop" originate from...like in soda pop?

I'm 27 years old and I never heard anyone call soda "pop" until just now. someone said "brb...I'm going to the store for pop" and I was like wtf...popcorn or pop tarts...and they said SODA POP...WTF. I live in Washington, dc all my life if that helps.

  1. Probably because when the bubbles rise they make a popping sound. Everyone I know refers to it as pop.

I found this site that maps the use of "soda" vs "pop" and it even lets you put in your location & usage. http://popvssoda.com:2998/   Haven't found the origin, yet, but I would guess the soda comes from the ingredients 7 the pop comes from the sound of the cap being popped off a soda bottle.  Interesting question.  I'm going to watch it for the answers.

  3. LOL.  They say that a lot in WV.  All the northerners I knew said it must have been a southern thing.  And now that I live in the south, they call it soda too.  Is the person from WV by chance?

    But it comes from the noise the carbonation makes.  Think Rice Crispies 'Snap Crackle and POP"  Same thing.
