Question:

Where did this stupid myth start? Welsh speakers in pubs?

As a Welsh man I wish I had 2 pence for every time I have heard the following quoted as a gospel truth;

" I walked into a pub in North Wales and everybody was speaking English - but when they realised I was English they all switched to Welsh!" (insert shock and suprise and perhaps some racist undertones here)

This awful piece of casual racism fails in the following ways.

1: Why would a bunch of people who speak Welsh as a first language prefer to communicate in English in their own pub? Novelty? For practice?

2: Why should an English manwoman/facist care if the locals communicate in their OWN SODDING LANGUAGE!!

This ridiculous myth has been trotted out more times than the old chestnut...

"I'm not a racist but..."

Next time somone tells you that this happened to them... tell them they are a liar and a racist to boot.

Honest to god I heard this story THREE ******* TIMES today! If it was really true every pib in Wales would full of the ******* English 24/7.

  1. I have just returned from a holiday in Beddgelert, North Wales, and personally I was not remotely offended by the locals chatting in their native tongue.(I am sure that if they had something to say either to me or about me, they would have said it to me in English).  When in Rome, you do as the Romans do.

      Please try and get your grievance into perspective. I have many friends who are Welsh and I accept them for who they are, just like they accept me for who I am.
