  1. History of Aquatic Exercise

The use of water as a therapeutic medium dates back many centuries. The early Romans and Greeks used hot baths for healing and recreation. Hippocrates advocated water treatments for a variety of ailments. For many societies, the use of water was closely associated with the spiritual worship of water and the perceived healing power of water. People prayed to the rain god or the river goddess to provide this life-giving element in just the right quantity. By AD 330, the main use of the Roman baths was for healing of a variety of diseases and injuries. The use was passive and consisted mainly of drinking the water and sitting in it. President Franklin D. Roosevelt popularized the use of therapeutic water exercises and therapeutic swimming in the 1920's when he used water exercise to treat his own polio. Aquatic physical therapy has been part of the curriculum for students of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in England since 1965 (Ruoti, Morris, and Cole, 1997). The Aquatic Physical Therapy Section of the American Physical Therapy Association was created in 1992 by two physical therapists, Judy Cirullo and Richard Ruoti.

The greatest thing about water aerobics is that it makes it vey east to exercise nearly every part of your body with the added bonus of putting less strain on your body. Depending on the exercise, the water should be from waist deep to chest level. You can actually do just about any aerobic exercise routine that you do out of water. As mentioned probably the biggest advantage is that water aerobics is very low impact and so any "outside' exercises you do in the pool will benefit you just as much with much less risk to your body. This is especially helpful to people that have injuries or for the older generation that sometimes struggle with aches and pains.
