Only about 20% of Americans have passports, so the majority aren't going abroad.  

The most popular vacation spots for Americans are lakes, seaside resorts, national parks, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Alaska, beaches and theme parks in Florida.

American have one of the lowest rates of ownerships of passports in the western world.  They also have the shortest amount of annual leave to go on holidays (Japan excluded).  These are the reasons why most of them tend to take holidays close by.  Mostly you only see elderly Americans travelling far and wide (and then they tend to stick with bus tours and cruises).

Its pretty hard for Americans to go abroad. Besides driving into canada or mexico (neither of which is very exciting), to go abroad means paying around 800-1200 in plane tickets alone where as we can go across the country and spend 2 weeks in 1 place for that same amount. Plus the U.S. has mountains, planes, lakes, rivers, swamps, deserts, canyons ect.

Where do they actually go?  Many Americans stay home.  A few go to Canada.  A few go to Europe, where Paris is a very popular destination.

I think most Americans vacation in the US.  The US is so vast compared to many other countries and there are so many things to see.  If you live in a cold climate, you can visit a tropical climate without leaving the country.  You can go from the mountains to the beach; from the urban cities to the farmland.  Having lived in Europe, Central America, and South America, and visiting almost every state in the US, there are still things in the US that I would rather visit than going abroad.
